Has there been anyone with so little experience and no achievements who has also been so popular with so many as Obama? Certainly not in my lifetime. I would be so bold as to say 20 years ago Obama would have been laughed at by many Americans were he to have been on the scene then. Oh, certainly not by the media, but it seems like people gave more thought to candidates then.
When I ask an Obama supporter why they vote for him, all I get for an answer is "change". When I ask why that's important and what sort of change, most say he brings "hope". "Hope for what?", I ask. "Hope for change", they say. And so the vicious cycle begins. If you get into a debate with your typical liberal Dem don't bring names into it. Just talk issues. Ask if they support a raise in the capital gains tax. Most will say yes, then point out the fact that twice since 1995 capital gains has been cut, first to 20% and then to 15%, and each time revenue went up and not down. After you mention that, point out 1986 when capital gains was last raised when the Dem's took over the senate and that in just one years time revenue from capital gains was cut by almost half. These aren't numbers pulled out from thin air. They are easily found from the IRS. Of course when you do point these facts out, expect a blank look similar to what Obama gave Charles Gibson in the ABC debate when he pointed out the revenue increase.
The truth is, this junior senator has no clue. Most support him because, unfortunately, many in the country have become greedy and he promises that he will take care of them and no one will have any responsibility. Oh, except for the so called "rich" who he will take everything from until they decide they won't work anymore to provide for everyone but their own families.
Unfortunately we as conservatives are in the position of facing an Obama presidency because we don't have a candidate. McCain, while better than Obama, certainly on national security, is very liberal himself. Even I have to admit to thinking, "if I pull the lever for McCain am I ensuring a democrat victory in 2012?". There certainly is logic to the thinking "it took a Carter to get to Reagan". But is there a "Reagan" in the wings like there was in 1976 to give hope? And can we afford 4 years of this "Carter" named Obama? There is a lot of questions to be asked and not a lot of time to get answers.
